Who was Castle Street?







Late 1700's
Origins of the Name: Possibly named after “Wimble’s Castle,” a fortress built by Captain James Wimble to defend against Spanish pirates.
Mid 1800's
Residential-Commercial Mix: Castle Street becomes a hub of integrated living and working spaces.
1920
Community Hospital Opens: Serves Black residents during segregation; includes a nursing school.
1939
Expansion: Community Hospital receives federal funding for growth during the New Deal era.
1973
Joye’s Grocery, Valerio’s Grocery, Coburn’s Grocery, Chick N Pig Restaurant, Simmons Record Shop, Phillips 66 gas station, Winn-Dixie supermarket, Heritage Cleaners (now Olivero restaurant)
1999-2000's
Castle Street Arts & Antiques District (CAAD): Michael Moore helps revitalize vacant buildings with antique shops and art galleries.
2010's
Creative Renaissance: Gravity Records, Jess James & Co., and Jester’s
2015-2017
Early interest from developers begins, but few formal proposals.
2018-2019
City begins evaluating surplus properties for sale, including the Wave Transit lot at 1110 Castle Street. 720 Castle Street is proposed by JTV Investments: 10 apartments + retail space. Historic building demolitions begin, sparking preservation debates.
2020-2021
1110 Castle Street sold for $867,500 to developer James Goodnight Jr. Plans for MidCastle emerge: 98 apartments + 4,200 sq ft commercial space. South Sixth & Castle project announced: 30 apartments + ground-floor retail. Multiple parcels on the 500 block acquired for future mixed-use development.
2022-2023
MidCastle breaks ground, signaling major density increase.
2023
Restoration of 1220 Castle St., a 1920 gas station, into a potential bar and grill. Wilmington City Council sells 1110 Castle St. (former bus maintenance site) for mixed-use development
2024-2025
Over 100 new residential units completed or nearing completion. Castle Street transitions into a mixed-use corridor with walkable housing, nightlife, and creative businesses.
